What is Hip Pain?

The hip is one of the body’s largest joints, connecting the legs to the pelvis and supporting many everyday movements. Hip pain refers to discomfort felt in or around the hip joint, though pain may also spread into the groin, thigh, leg, buttocks, or even toward the knee. At Greater Austin Pain Center, our San Marcos pain specialists are board-certified physicians with advanced training in pain management who work to identify the source of your hip pain and recommend pain management solutions aimed at reducing discomfort and improving mobility.

How does Hip Pain affect the body?

The hip joint is built for both strength and flexibility. It helps support body weight while allowing movements such as bending, straightening, rotating, and moving the leg side to side. When the hip becomes painful, simple activities like walking, standing, climbing stairs, exercising, or sleeping comfortably can become difficult, and pain may spread into the groin, thigh, leg, buttocks, or knee; pain in the buttock or back of the hip may also be referred from the lower back or sacroiliac joint, as with sacroiliac joint pain.

Hip pain may also affect the way you move. If you begin limping or shifting your weight to avoid discomfort, added strain can develop in the lower back, knees, legs, or opposite hip.

Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain can develop for many reasons, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Muscle or tendon strain caused by repetitive activities/exercise
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Previous injury
  • Wear and tear on the joint

Treatment for Hip Pain in San Marcos, Texas

Hip pain treatment should be based on what is causing the discomfort. Mild muscle, tendon, or bursa-related injuries may improve with conservative care such as rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Hip pain related to arthritis or inflammation may require a more targeted approach, including medication, injections, physical therapy, or other pain management options.

At Greater Austin Pain Center, our San Marcos pain specialists provide personalized care for hip pain with advanced treatment options, including X-ray guided intra-articular steroid injections and peripheral nerve stimulation when appropriate. Our goal is to help reduce chronic pain, support better movement, and improve your ability to get through daily activities more comfortably.

Our pain specialists also treat related chronic pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, sciatica, migraines, arthritis, joint pain, nerve pain, neuropathy, and sacroiliac joint pain.

Am I at Risk for Hip Pain?

Hip pain can affect patients of all ages, but certain factors may increase your risk. Aging can make hip pain more likely due to arthritis, joint changes, and a higher risk of fractures. Other risk factors include excess weight, weak muscles, an inactive lifestyle, repetitive activity, previous injuries, and certain structural issues affecting the hip joint.
