What to Expect from Nerve Blocks
A nerve block injection is an outpatient procedure performed at our San Marcos clinic, typically taking about 30 minutes. Light sedation may be available, depending on the procedure and patient preference. During the injection, patients may feel brief pressure or a pinch at the injection site.
Most patients are able to resume normal activity within 24 hours. Pain relief duration varies depending on the type of nerve block performed, with some patients experiencing relief for weeks or months. Nerve blocks may also be used to guide further treatment options, such as epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency treatments, or spinal cord stimulation.
Side Effects of Nerve Blocks
Serious complications from nerve blocks are uncommon. As with any medical procedure, potential risks may include infection, bleeding, or temporary nerve irritation. Patients taking blood thinners or those with certain medical conditions may have a higher risk and should discuss this during their evaluation.
